Sunflour Baking Company
Review! Charlotte, North Carolina // American bakery + cafe // disappointing

the ELEVATOR PITCH
She’s your typical southern belle who sports a staccato southern accent and is happy with never leaving her quaint southern town. If she invites you over for afternoon tea, you definitely should go (because that means you’ve made it into the in-crowd), but don’t expect European chic. Her croissants are slightly better than a supermarket’s, her espresso concoctions get the job done but don’t wow (no house-made syrups here), her sandwiches are a hair above those zero-substance, ham-cheese-WonderBread sandwiches those stereotypical American moms pack for their middle schoolers for lunches.

Reviews on the munchies pictured above:
French Onion Bacon Melt: this was pretty disappointing… the bread was crispy and wafer like, versus warm and chewy like what you would expect from a panini vibe. The filling was minimal and you could barely find the cheese. For the price point, this was not worth it for me (rating: 1/10)
Kickin’ Chicken: slightly better than the French Onion Melt in sandwich filling and panini vibes, but still didn’t live up to the panini calling (rating: 2/10)

Reviews on the munchies pictured above:
Plain Croissant: almost the same as a croissant you’d get from a grocery store, just girthier. Expect a drier texture that makes for a great dipping mechanism in your beverage (rating: 5/10)
Apple Crumb Croissant: best item from Sunflour from our visit. The apple filling met my expectations of “ode to apple pie” and the pastry carrier was flaky! (rating: 7/10)
But! But. She is perfect if you’re looking for a typical American bakery and café menu experience and need to cater to family members of all ages. Simplified, she’s really just like a Panera, just the regional-chain-local-staple-of-the-Charlotte-community version.
the RÉSUMÉ
address // multiple locations, we went to the one in Dilworth: 220 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203
operations // Monday - Sunday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
logistics // there’s a parking lot in the back and it’s also easy to find street parking
vibes // perfect place for families with little kids or older family members (when we were there, there were SO many kids, so it definitely gets noisy); not suitable for working
all beverages & baked goods are served in to-go containers
the baked goods’ case wasn’t well-labeled, but that could’ve just been an off-day
vents on floor that blow cold air make it inconvenient to sit in certain parts of the dining area
the chairs are light and can easily topple over if you’re not careful
took 30 minutes to receive our sandwiches
amenities //
2 public restrooms (no changing table)
free WiFi with password posted, but the WiFi doesn’t seem to work
outlets are available on the walls near the base boards
menu //
beverages ($3.00 - $5.00): coffee & espresso (coffee used: Pure Intentions), tea
syrups + flavorings are NOT made in-house
baked goods (~$5.00): muffins, scones, cookies, etc.
viennoiserie (~$4.50): croissants, danishes
mains (~$10.00): breakfast sandwiches, paninis, salads
recs //
positive experience: their danishes!
negative experience: the sandwiches are 90% bread with not much substance; the rosemary bread was disappointing—it was just white bread with green flecks (other locations may have better food though?)
