Bobby Boy Bakeshop
Review! Winston-Salem, North Carolina // coffee + patisserie + viennoiserie // feels like Europe
the ELEVATOR PITCH
Did you know, Bobby Boy Bakeshop was nominated as one of the James Beard Award semi-finalists in 2024? (Again, what is with Winston-Salem having all of these amazing gastronomy gems!)
Bobby Boy Bakeshop brings the elegance and skilled execution of viennoiserie and patisserie that is seen at every corner in London and Paris to such an unassuming spot: Winston-Salem (no offense, Winston-Salem). Prioritizing only the highest of ingredients in all that they serve (from pastries to lunch sandies to coffee), John and Lucia Bobby’s extreme attention to detail paired with high standards classifies each pastry to the level of top-tier world-ranked art.

Now let’s talk the interior—nestled in next to the The Caviste Wine Shop (where the Bobby Boy Bakeshop team is in charge of the small plates, can you believe that! John and Lucia Bobby are friends with Russ Anderson & Alice Chen, the owners of Caviste, which led to this partnership), they are such a tall, cold glass of water. Absolutely refreshing to look at.

Natural sunlight flowing in, shiny marble counter walls, beautiful fingerprint-free glass holding you back from getting too intimate with the goods, the atmosphere is modern and clean yet cozy and French countryside. There’s an air of Europe laced in everything. The only con—someone get them more space and longer hours! I want to eat their food every hour of the day!

Now onto a couple of the menu offerings…
Reviews on the munchies & sips pictured above:
Vanilla Latte: house made syrup, classically done, beautiful pour (rating: 9/10)
Pistachio Croissant: loved the touch of the roasted pistachios on top, and the cream in the middle was good, but could’ve had a slightly stronger pistachio flavor. No notes on the croissant itself. (rating: 8/10)
Pain au Raisin: another classic well executed, I enjoy when the roll layers aren’t detaching from each other, and this one held together so nicely. (rating: 9/10)
Ham & Cheese Croissant: hefty amount of ham & cheese, and quite flavorful. A great fallback savory option if you want something light for breakfast but not something that falls under sweet/indulgent. (rating: 9/10)
